The announcement was made by Governor David Umahi as the management of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund paid him a courtesy visit.

Gov Umahi revealed the state’s plans to install Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) in several Police Stations across rural areas.

He is of the belief that the recent incident at the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja could have been prevented if the facility had CCTV installed.

He said: “What happened at Abuja with the break at the Kuje Correctional Centre couldn’t have occurred if the facility was well equipped with CCTV. The correctional center in Abakaliki is fully equipped with CCTV, which makes officers to see people approaching kilometers from afar.

“I strongly think that police stations across the state should be equipped with solar-powered lights and CCTV for effective monitoring of movements.

“We also renovated structures at the state Police Headquarters, tarred its surroundings, installed street lights at the facility, and provided generators among other interventions.

“I experience serious health challenges whenever a police officer is killed on duty because they do not have to die while toiling to protect us.”

Dr. Ben Akabueze, who is the Director General of the Budget Office, on behalf of the Police Trust Fund delegation expressed gratitude to Governor Umahi for the reception.

Akabueze said: “We deeply appreciate the numerous support given to the Force by the state government in terms of operational equipment and infrastructure.”
